Following the war, not very many inhabitants who were initially from Japan decided to go back home. Instead, they became inhabitants of Canada or America. This new way of living became so serious even in Southeast Asia, where the Chinese migrated to settle in Hong Kong.
This trend of movement has become a very popular thing and even in these new locations, there is often evidence that indicates the presence of these new settlers. For example, it is common to find shops that offer only items from a particular location. This is often a cause for concern.

There was usually no regulation for doing so. The only thing that was done was to remind traders that this was a way of making probable customers stay away from their shops. This led to the introduction of other signs in different languages such as Hindu or Vietnam on shop windows. When these different languages were introduced, these traders began realizing some increases in the number of their customers.

This also made it very easy for people to interact with each other. Remember that these signs were often used as an alternative to learning. People became accustomed to the cultures, traditions, lifestyles and even particular behavior of others. This was only through such interactions.

These characteristics are very common to Richmond. People have found it difficult to believe people from very diverse background can live side by side each other. But the truth is that this is a probability and it can be evident in Richmond. This is a city close to the sea surrounded by mountains. At one time, I found myself in a similar place. This was Victoria, found in British Columbia in Canada and not very far off from Richmond.

There is a Chinese myth that living in this type of place is akin to living is paradise on earth. People tend to live in harmony with others and when people act the way they are supposed to, every person becomes a new and exceptional person.

I had an experience one day about this new way of living at the stairs in a shopping center. There was a young man in front of me with both Chinese and Canadian origin. This young man was with an aged Chinese lady. What was happening is that she was feeble; and she was obstructing the passage. She eagerly asked the young man in Chinese to give her a helping hand.

Surprisingly, this young man took a look at me, look at an elderly white man who was standing also by, and spoke in English, “grandma”.

This old woman burst out in anger and retorted at this young man. She was surprised that this young man could speak English very well. She commented that this young man was no longer a little good Chinese boy, but a small Canadian boy. She instantly backed off from this young man. This young man just simply made all of us knew that we were residing in Canada.

This is something one could not imagine still happened. I lastly witness this type of attitude in the 1950s in Los Angeles; where English children were despised by black and Mexican Americans. But we managed to live side by side this attitude. Over the years, there has been the influx of so many Chinese and Southeast Asian citizens into Canada. In most cases, the number of foreigners in these areas is even more than the original inhabitants. Although people find it difficult to live with others, this should be a perfect way to grow up as one.
