Hypothyroidism is a condition where ones thyroid gland is under-active. The most common symptoms include fatigue, feeling cold, constipation, dry skin, blurred vision and slight numbness, particularly in the fingers and toes.

Hypothyroidism can remain undetected for many years before being diagnosed properly. Usually, a blood test is administered, and will typically indicate that ones thyroid gland is functioning normally when in fact, it isn't! A general saliva test done by a natural health practitioner is much more accurate.

There are several prescription medications that are typically prescribed for hypothyroidism, but a natural alterative is still available through prescription only, known as "Armour." However, this natural prescription is still incomplete when ingested alone. Proper diet is the ultimate compliment to this natural "drug."

Some of the foods that help to improve an under-active thyroid gland are:

Iodine rich foods...

Seafood, seaweed, and Celtic sea salt contain high levels of iodine needed to make thyroid hormones in the human body.

Tyrosine rich foods...

Red meat, fish, turkey chicken breast, or practically any type of meat, low fat milk, yogurt, bananas, pumpkin seeds, lentils are all well known sources of tyrosine. When eaten on an empty stomach (so that it will not compete with other amino acids) tyrosine will join with iodine to make the hormone, thyroxin, which will in turn, boost the thyroid gland.

Selenium rich foods...

Chicken, red meat, tuna, whole grains, Brazil nuts, broccoli, garlic, onions and black strap molasses are all foods that contain high levels of selenium. The selenium in these foods cause the human body to produce the thyroxin hormone.

High quality protein rich foods...

Red meat, fish, turkey chicken breast, or practically any type of meat, dairy products, and eggs are all great sources of high quality protein. Since all of the human body's glands are made up of proteins eating a protein rich diet containing these foods will build immunity and will help to produce good quality hormones.

Foods rich in Vitamin B complex...

Vitamin B helps improve the human immune system and also helps in numbness and neuropathy. Some natural food sources that are rich in Vitamin B Complex include bananas, potatoes, lentils, other whole grains, chili peppers, green vegetables, eggs, dairy products, and meats including turkey, tuna, and liver.

Conclusion

If you have a family history of hypothyroidism you may be at risk of developing this "disease," as it is hereditary. But, habitually eating certain foods can have a serious impact on its prevention.

One should never underestimate the role a healthy diet plays in the quality of ones life! Even though sometimes we may try to eat healthy, its just unrealistic for anyone to eat healthy all the time. That's why its important for everyone to include a high-quality natural food supplement in their diet!
