Having a safe skiing outing requires more than just a strong pair of legs and good sense of balance - if you don't use your head, you can easily end up injuring yourself. The first thing you've got to do before you hit the slope is to take in your surroundings; examine the terrain. Take note of the condition of the snow along your course - some snow will cause you to lose control. Take note of where the trees are, because although hitting a tree is one way to stop yourself, it's certainly not in your best interest. Skiing is a lot like running a business. You must always be prepared and ready to adapt. Ironically, some of the fastest thinking businessmen are some of the clumsiest skiers!

Learning to ski is a gradual process. Mastering the art of skiing is no simple task. Although many movements may seem natural and obvious, it's important to maintain focus and consider every movement. When I'm skiing, I am always 100% focused on my every action, and I find it easy to dodge obstacles. Meanwhile novice skiers are likely to beeline right for them like bugs to a bug-zapper, as though they were drawn to them.

Aside from your wits, your eyes are your biggest assets on the slopes. You've got to quickly absorb your surroundings, because you need to decide very quickly how you are going to move to avoid rapidly approaching hazards. Believe it or not, the consistency of the snow will also require you to adjust your technique. It's important to be able to identify different types of snow - approaching each type of snow with the same tactic is asking for trouble. Remember at all times not ski recklessly, to take in your surroundings, reflect and adapt to changing conditions.

For More Advanced Skiers

There are a number of elements that embody a good skier. Among these are nerves of steel, agility, endurance, sharp eyes and mind, a good sense of balance and a healthy heart and lungs. Training can only account for so much of these - one who aspires to be a truly remarkable skier must also have natural talent. Preparation and ambition are not enough for these ultimate skiers, but for the rest of us, all the ingredients of a strong skier can be found in your average person.

With practice and commitment, you will begin to naturally feel how to move on the skis. The process could be sped up if only the skier could watch himself ski... but sadly this option isn't available to the majority. If more people would ease into skiing like this, a lot of these human hazards would be off the course.

By far, the most important attribute of a strong ski runner is the determination. Never giving up. You must practice and practice, in spite of your frustration trying to learn advanced techniques, like the parallel swing. Continue to practice until your movements are effortless and you are proficient with moving with either side of your body.

Sadly, there is no device to tell you when your falls might have been avoided had you been more resolute. Still, after each fall, you should take note and consider if there was a way that the fall might have been avoided.

Skiing is a dangerous sport, and full of surprises. The slightest straying from your technique can lead to dangerous accidents - so you must be courageous, yet careful. Bravery can be a great ally in learning to ski, so long as you're able to deal with danger calmly and remain in control.

Ultimately, practice and focus will make you the skier you've dreamed of being. Just stick with it!
