Thirty years ago the very idea that analyzing handwriting was anything else but an adjunct to fortune telling was not even thought of. Books on psychology scoffed at the idea of a handwriting specimen revealing anything about a writer, other than whether he or she could write legibly. Graphoanalysis has given me one reward that cannot be measured in dollars and cents, or for that matter, in any other way I can describe. It has given me the ability to know people. All kinds of people. Calligrapher Edward Johnston contributed a lot to the modern world of calligraphy. Looking back through the ages it can be seen that calligraphy has played an important part in the development of civilization, and that it has manifested itself in many ways and through many agents. From about the year 1930 calligraphy writing and lettering had made such progress that it had become a subject in the training of Art Teachers and was taught by the immediate followers of the two who had given their lives to its cause. Before the beginning of the 20th Century little had been written about calligraphy except The Story of the Alphabet by Edward Clodd and Maude Thompson's fine work on Greek and Latin Paleography together with his volume on English Illuminated Manuscripts, published in 1895 and out of print before 1906. 1 | ||
